Obama’s speech

My thoughts on the Inauguration speech:

It was good quality Obama. Lots of what he is good at.
He did what he should have in it –
some good content, some good aphorisms, a real attempt to unite and look past differences, and call for reasonable action over emotion and rhetoric.

He did lean to the left, as we both want, but that puts some fear in the right. Some of the right we can marginalize and disregard, some need to be recognized and countered rationally. Both sides need to practice what they preach – rational debate and compromise over name calling and foregone conclusions.

Let’s remember, though: W ruined the economy and world relations in his 2nd term. Clinton was impeached, Reagan – Iran-Contra, Nixon…yada yada.

I’m looking forward to the next term!

One Response to Obama’s speech

  1. JP says:

Yeah, second terms are tricky. And they’re really only two years. Because after the midterm election nothing ever really gets done–or is covered at all by the media, because the only story that can get any oxygen is the next presidential election. So let’s hope for a positive next two years building on some good accomplishments. Some commentator said that Obama’s biggest accomplishment in his second term is simply getting reelected, so that his first term successes, like the Affordable Care Act, will actually be implemented. And that is surely true. Not that we don’t hope he continues and does more, and the fact of a second term makes good on the promise of the first.
