Oh, the guns

Gail Collins has a good take on guns today. And it’s good to see it being discussed in the media and punditry. Of course the one place we will see no serious discussion of it is in the halls of government, where something could be done about it. The NRA owns the Republicans and frightens the Democrats.
It’s true Obama campaigned on passing gun control and in actuality the only gun law he has signed is to allow people to carry guns in national parks. And it’s not all Obama’s fault. I just watched a good interview with John Rosenthal, the co-founder of Stop Handgun Violence. Early in the Obama administration he was invited to the White House and met with some of the top officials, and he asked why Obama wasn’t doing anything on gun control. He was shown a letter signed by 50 Democrats, including Gabby Giffords, that said if he wanted health care he couldn’t do anything on guns. So he didn’t. So the NRA won again, and America lost. And still, anyone in America, citizen or not, terrorist or not, can buy any amount of guns they want at gun shows with cash, without even showing an ID. And they can buy guns that even our police are not allowed to carry. Not that I’m telling you anything, Jim. You live in Texas.Hey, did you hear the big news yesterday, the day after the Colorado theater shooting? What news? Just that 84 people across the country were killed by gunshot and another couple hundred injured. But that isn’t really news because it happens EACH AND EVERY SINGLE DAY. We only pay attention to the Colorado one because it was concentrated. When the BBC reports on these things they just say, calmly and matter of factly, “in the latest mass shooting in America.” Just one more thing we’re number one in.

About JP

We're two guys who met in college, in 1980. We've stayed in touch, and like to talk politics, current events, music and religion. JP is nore liberal than Sid, but not in every way. We figure that dialogue stimulates ideas, moderates perspective, and is in general friendly. These are things we need badly in these dangerous times. The blog name is taken from a song by Bruce Cockburn.

Some of my Texas friends are posting Facebook comments in fear of losing their gun rights. One called it “victim protection.” I call it an arms race.
