Obama and gas prices

Bill Scher at the Campaign for America’s Future has a nice reminder today of how Obama addressed high gas prices during the 2008 campaign when Clinton and McCain were calling for a gas tax holiday. What did Obama do? He did not call for a gas tax holiday, and instead told the truth; that a gas tax holiday would be a temporary fix and that a long term solution would require alternative energy, better energy efficiency, and better fuel efficiency standards. He has followed through on raising mileage requirements (never as fast as environmentalists would like, and it’s still a good move considering the anti-environment Republicans would prefer no standards). He could be better on promoting alternative energy (and talk less about nuclear power), and he is up against great opposition. It’s also worth remembering, and we hope Obama remembers, that telling the truth worked in 2008. He won. Let’s hope he continues to tell the truth and that enough American voters continue to have his back.

About JP

We're two guys who met in college, in 1980. We've stayed in touch, and like to talk politics, current events, music and religion. JP is nore liberal than Sid, but not in every way. We figure that dialogue stimulates ideas, moderates perspective, and is in general friendly. These are things we need badly in these dangerous times. The blog name is taken from a song by Bruce Cockburn.
