Outside Money

Iowans who gave more than $200 to a Republican candidate gave a total of less than a quarter of a million dollars. Since that amount is spent about every hour in television ads for the last several weeks, it’s clear that the great majority of the money in all the campaigns came from outside of Iowa. (And this isn’t even counting Super PAC money which technically can’t be connected to a candidate.) Thank the Center for Responsive Politics for their good work.
Why do the Iowa caucuses matter? Because they are a huge infusion of money into the economy of the state (at the expense of the sanity of Iowans who are subjected to all the ads).

Candidate $ from Iowans Percentage
Mitt Romney $61,800 27.8%
Ron Paul $59,435 26.8%
Michele Bachmann $26,674 12.0%
Rick Santorum $22,400 10.1%
Herman Cain $20,500 9.2%
Tim Pawlenty $14,500 6.5%
Rick Perry $8,950 4.0%
Newt Gingrich $7,650 3.4%
Gary Johnson $250 0.1%
Total: $222,159

About JP

We're two guys who met in college, in 1980. We've stayed in touch, and like to talk politics, current events, music and religion. JP is nore liberal than Sid, but not in every way. We figure that dialogue stimulates ideas, moderates perspective, and is in general friendly. These are things we need badly in these dangerous times. The blog name is taken from a song by Bruce Cockburn.
