The Liberal Mainstream Media Strikes Again….

….or not. Earlier this year I gave up on when their president was interviewed on NPR’s On the Media show and admitted that they didn’t report some negative things about what Republican candidates were saying because they didn’t want to look biased. And now the other mainstream watchdog group, Politifact, has done the same thing, giving its “biggest lie of the year” award to the one Democratic “lie” among their five finalists, even though as the linked article shows it was actually true; the Republicans in voting for Paul Ryan’s bill in the House did vote to end Medicare as we know it. And the other four finalists were all easily proven lies that the Republicans had repeated over and over. John Kyle’s claim that 90% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortions, Bachmann’s strange claim, which even she didn’t try to provide evidence to support, that the HPV vaccine can make children retarded, etc. etc. It’s quite clear, as Paul Waldman argues, that they were simply afraid to give the award three years in a row to a Republican lie, for fear the Right would scream about liberal bias, and it would, you know, give Sean Hannity a field day.
It’s very sad when supposed non-partisan media watchdogs abandon factual evidence because they fear looking partisan. Shouldn’t they report facts, and stick to facts, and wherever they fall, they fall? Now that they have abandoned that, they have become useless. Factcheck and Politifact have proven they are too afraid of the Right’s smear machine to stick to their mission of reporting facts and calling out liars and calling a spade a spade. It’s too bad. We will have to look elsewhere for a new media watchdog, as these two venerable institutions have thrown in the towel.

About JP

We're two guys who met in college, in 1980. We've stayed in touch, and like to talk politics, current events, music and religion. JP is nore liberal than Sid, but not in every way. We figure that dialogue stimulates ideas, moderates perspective, and is in general friendly. These are things we need badly in these dangerous times. The blog name is taken from a song by Bruce Cockburn.
