Dumbing Down

Jim, I have been out a couple days and am catching up. I will get to a proper response to your last big post in the next day or two. For now, a couple shorter posts. I just wrote about dumbing down, and then came on this article on the new Texas education curriculum. I know you have been all over this and we have discussed it before. About a decade ago I wrote a novel which dealt in part on how Texas decided its curriculum. I had worked in educational publishing for a couple years and was astonished by how much the industry bowed down to Texas, because they are one of the two largest purchasers of textbooks (along with California) and they have statewide approval (unlike many states, where each district can decide what textbooks to use) which means if a local district wants any state money to purchase textbooks they have to choose from the ones the state approved. Looking back at that novel now, and comparing it to what is happening today, it almost seems quaint. It seems that the number one goal of the Republican Right today is to ensure that no matter what else happens, the enlightenment is over.

About JP

We're two guys who met in college, in 1980. We've stayed in touch, and like to talk politics, current events, music and religion. JP is nore liberal than Sid, but not in every way. We figure that dialogue stimulates ideas, moderates perspective, and is in general friendly. These are things we need badly in these dangerous times. The blog name is taken from a song by Bruce Cockburn.
